Massacre in Paradise!

The beautiful landscapes, sunsets and soft island breeze do not overshadow the lovely friends we make each trip to the islands. Donna Irvin made her first visit to Hawaii from Illinois to Co-Instruct the August clinics in Waimea on the Big Island, and Haleiwa on the island of Oahu, and agreed that teaching on the islands is like working in paradise. A great time was had by all and it is to the good nature of the island wahine paniolos, cowgirls, with beautiful Hawaiian names, that they didn’t bury me in the arena sand for the way I repeatedly massacred the pronunciation of their melodic names!

event in their beautiful, state-of-the-art arena,
located near Waimea on the Big Island.
The sun, sand and beautiful scenery makes our clinics in paradise one of our annual favorites. Pudding Lassiter, our Big Island sponsor, always sets up great entertainment and Hawaiian hospitality and this trip was no exception. She called her friend, Corky Bryan, Vice President in charge of Cattle Operations for the famous Parker Ranch and asked him to give us a tour of the historic property during our stay in Waimea. Donna, and my son Wade and I, enjoyed meeting Corky and appreciated the day he took to show us the ranch.
One of the best parts of the trip was the opportunity to take my son Wade. Wade will be sworn into the U. S. Navy in September limiting his opportunity to travel with “mom.” Wade did a good job handling video and audio duties during the programs and an even better job snorkeling the beautiful bays of the islands!
Competition on the islands is fierce and the competitors are creative in their ability to transport their horses from one island to another. Though the largest contingency of performance horses is on the Big Island, Kauai boasts its fair share. The islands of Maui and Oahu are also well represented with talented horses and extremely competitive riders. It is a pleasure to continue to work with the Rita Family on Oahu. Kathy sets up our programs and daughter Shelby is one of our Performance Team members. Kathy and husband Robert have three sons in addition to Shelby, all talented ropers in their own right. Being raised with brothers has provided Shelby with a strong and healthy sense of competition!
And speaking of competition, Donna was doing some recruiting herself for the Equestrian Science Department at Black Hawk College. We are strong advocates of continuing education and look forward to the possibility of having some of our Hawaiian cowgirls attend this fine facility with the idea of furthering their academic and equestrian educations under Donna’s watchful eye.
Congratulations to these Fast-time Winners!
